Hector Garcia Recalls Dominating Devin Haney in Sparring

WBA ‘regular’ junior lightweight champion “El Androide” Hector Garcia (16-0, 10KO) is not feeling the love from certain members of the boxing fraternity. The Dominican recently shifted focus briefly toward undisputed lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney for comments about a sparring session.

In boxing, the “tune-up” means a challenger or fight is easy work. So, it’s safe to assume Garcia will feel a little disrespected whenever the word is attached to his name. Furthermore, he killed that narrative after defeating top contender Chris Colbert and took the WBA title belt off Roger Gutierrez.

THE COMMENT THAT STARTED THE WHOLE THING

Nevertheless, fans still believe El Androide is a tune-up for multi-divisional champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Here is where Haney comes into the picture. During an interview on Tha Boxing Voice, Haney was not shy about calling Garcia a tune-up based on his performance in a sparring session.

“I sparred him (Garcia). He’s a tune-up. I kicked him out of camp. He got kicked out of camp because he couldn’t last. I sparred him for the Jo Jo Diaz fight . . . he just couldn’t keep up.”

GARCIA’S SARCASTIC RESPONSE

In fairness, the undisputed champion did admit that Davis can’t take the WBA champion lightly. However, Garcia took exception to The Dream’s recollection of the sparring session. He posted an edited clip of the session with him getting the best of Haney along with a sarcastic thank you message.

Garcia will get a chance to prove all the doubters wrong in the upcoming showdown with Davis on Showtime Pay-Per-View on January 7, 2023.
