Ismael Salas Sees A Different Fighter in Errol Spence Since the Danny Garcia Fight
With a little over two weeks to go, excitement is starting to build for the Errol Spence (27-0, 21KOs) and Yordenis Ugas (27-4, 12KOs) unification bout. At Ugas’ media day workout, his trainer, Ismael Salas, spoke with the media about Spence and whether or not he’s the same fighter and which version they hope will show up.
“There was nothing to take away from him; he was not the same guy [who fought] Shawn Porter as [the guy] who fought with Danny Garcia. Something’s missing. He was missing something there.”
“Something was missing there, maybe the fire, maybe the weight, for many reasons, you know. But I really, really hope he bring all the best from him. “
It’s no secret that Spence has been through the ringer outside of the ring. In October of 2019, he was involved in a near-fatal car accident that nearly cost him not only his career, but his life as well. While he did eventually bounce back and dominate two-division world champion Danny Garcia in December of 2020, it wasn’t a vintage Errol Spence performance.
After another long layoff, he was set to face all-time great and future hall of famer Manny Pacquiao in August of 2021. However, a detached retina KO’d him from that bout. Mind you, that was an injury that could’ve cost him his career as well.
But if you ask Spence, he’ll tell you he feels great, one hundred percent healthy and ready to go for the Ugas bout. Still, those are legitimate questions and concerns after being through multiple traumatic incidents. While it seems as if its only his physical condition being questioned, one has to wonder where his head is mentally as well.
Come April 16, we’ll get to see if Spence is truly back or if Ugas has another upset in him!
