Jermell Charlo Excited to Dance with Tim Tszyu!
The reigning undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) has heard the message from newly crowned WBO Interim champion Tim Tszyu (22-0,16 KOs). Not one to turn his back after being called out, Charlo has something to say about the hard-hitting fighter from Australia.
Tszyu is fresh off a ninth-round stoppage over one-time WBC 154 pound world champion Tony Harrison. An interested observer was Charlo, who did in-studio commentary for that bout for SHOWTIME. After his victory over Harrison, Tszyu said he was coming for the undisputed champion.
ALLOW THE CHAMP TO RETORT
Charlo and Tszyu were to fight in January 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Unfortunately, the bout was postponed when Charlo suffered a broken left hand during training. After listening to Tzsyu’s call-out, Iron Man is itching to fight again.
“Man, I’m ready. When I get my hand right, and we get back in the ring for some more training, put him back in . . . I’m a different animal in there. I’m a different fighter than Tony. He can’t compare me and try to compare Tony’s skills or boxing . . . Tim is next, and that’s who we had before the injury. So, it’s not like I’m not prepared already.”
SIZING EACH OTHER UP
The undisputed champion is one of the more versatile fighters in the sport. Throughout his career, the 32-year-old has shown the ability to win by either boxing or digging deep and going to war.
Tszyu is a patient fighter who brings a lot of physical strength and punching power. At age 28, the Aussie is at his best when applying pressure. He’s not fleet of foot but has underrated hand speed. His style strikingly resembles that of his father, one-time undisputed junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu.
During the broadcast for Tszyu-Harrison, Charlo said he expects to fight again in late summer. When he does return, it will be against Tszyu. Their matchup will be something to witness and has grabbed the public’s interest.
