Jesse Rodriguez Primed to Beat Champion Antonio Vargas in Bantamweight Debut

June 13 marks the date that two-division world champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez moves up in weight to challenge reigning WBA bantamweight champion Antonio Vargas. Based on résumé, talent, and experience, Rodriguez appears to have an excellent opportunity to capture a world title in a third weight class.

By any modern standard, Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) is considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in boxing. A unified champion at both, flyweight and junior bantamweight, the 26-year-old is in the prime years of his career.

Standing in his way is Vargas (19-0, 11 KOs), an accurate puncher who is technically sound, durable, and battle-tested. Throughout his professional career, the Kissimmee, Florida native has repeatedly shown an ability to overcome adversity. Vargas has made it clear that he intends to turn this fight into a grueling battle, believing that his will, physicality, durability, and power will be enough to secure victory.

A DIFFERENT LEVEL OF FIGHTER

The challenge, however, is that Rodriguez is by far the most complete fighter Vargas has faced. Bam possesses elite boxing skills, power in both hands, exceptional footwork, and a high ring IQ. At times, the San Antonio native looks like a fistic savant on offense.

While technically brilliant, Rodriguez has also become a fan favorite because of his humility outside the ring and his willingness to engage in exciting exchanges once the bell sounds. That combination presents a daunting assignment for Vargas.

The reality is that many respected boxing observers do not view Vargas as the strongest champion in the bantamweight division. Rodriguez, meanwhile, is regarded as a special talent with the skills and athletic gifts to succeed against anyone he faces. It is no secret that Bam has his sights set on a future showdown with undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue. Before that can happen, he must first get past Vargas.

There are no guarantees in boxing. Yet all signs suggest the path has been laid for Rodriguez to add another world title to his already impressive résumé.
