Jesse Rodriguez Stops Juan Francisco Estrada in Round 7!
The fans at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona were treated to an instant classic as Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KO) regained the WBC junior bantamweight with a seventh-round knockout over Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada (44-4, 28 KOs).
Bam was on the attack from the opening bell. Displaying his outstanding footwork, he pounded Estrada, knocking him down in rounds three and four. At the end of the fifth, Estrada looked like a beaten man. But never count out the heart of a champion. In the opening minute of round six, a righthand from Estrada put Rodriguez down on the seat of his pants. The two warriors traded power punches throughout the round as the crowd was on their feet.
However, Bam proved to be too strong. At the closing seconds of round seven, a lefthand to the liver put Estrada down for the count in what was a dramatic finish.
Rodriguez is a fighter who is becoming a star right before the collective eyes of the boxing community. Afterward, he called for the winner of the July 7 unification clash between WBA champion Kazuto Ioka and IBF champion Fernando Martinez.
