Julian Williams wants a showdown with Jermell Charlo

When Julian “J-Rock” Williams (27-2-1, 16 KO’s) next steps into the ring, against Brian Mendoza, it will be the first time since his second professional loss. Although that second setback was far more costly due to losing his 154 pounds WBA Super and IBF titles. As if the belts were cursed, his conqueror, Jeison Rosario, would lose them too in his very next fight to WBC World Super Welterweight champion Jermell “Hit Man” Charlo (34-1, 18 KO’s).

After suffering the costly defeat, Williams would spending roughly a year and a half out of the ring. Yet, he has not lost an ounce of confidence. While giving respect to his fellow super welterweights, he is not bashful about viewing himself as being on top of the talent mountain. He would say as much to Brian Custer on the Last Stand Podcast.

“Jarrett Hurd got the best resume in the division, right? Jermell Charlo got the biggest punch and he got all them belts, so you got to respect that! But Julian Williams is the best fighter in the 154 pounds division! I’m not going to keep saying but I’m telling y’all, I’m telling y’all. Y’all laughed when I said it before then they sent me to the champion’s home town, thinking I was going to get slaughtered and I smashed him, you know what I mean? It’s a tough division, though.”

GIVE ME THE OTHER BROTHER!

Clearly, it would be unwise to overlook Mendoza but obviously Williams is confident that he will be successful. If that turns out to be true then J-Rock would seek to secure a prizefight with Jermell Charlo as quickly as possible. Despite his loss, Williams has retained a respectable standing in the rankings at #4 (WBA), #6 (WBC) and #11 (IBF). Yet aside from his fairly strategic standings, he believes that his name value will be key in securing that coveted showdown.

“Jermell want to stay on pay-per-view, then he going to have to fight me! Or Jarrett Hurd, but I don’t think nobody want to see him and Jarrett Hurd. He going to have to fight me if he want to stay on pay-per-view. That’s the best fight in the division to make…nobody knows Castano. Castano is a really good fighter but don’t nobody know who he is. He don’t even speak English, 5’5, 5’6, not a puncher, you know what I mean?”

“I think to create some buzz, I already got history with his brother.”

“Listen, Jermall is a good fighter and I don’t want to give away nothing but I was whipping Jermall’s ass! And they show that one clip, one highlight every chance they get! I won the first round, he knocked me down in the second, I won the third and fourth and I was whooping his ass in the fifth. But that’s a credit to him that he was getting handled and was able to zone in and land that perfect shot. So I don’t take no credit from him but he just caught me with a good shot. And nobody show when I got up, I did get up! But that’s boxing man.”

There is no question that a J-Rock versus Hit Man prizefight would create buzz, but it’s uncertain if Charlo wants the fight in the first place. Also, as said before, Williams has to pass the test of Mendoza before he can realistically begin dreaming up future pay-per-view paydays. Yet, no matter how it plays out, 3kingsboxing will be there to report the news!
