Sivenathi Nontshinga To Defend IBF Title Against Regie Suganob in South Africa

IBF junior flyweight champion Sivenathi “Special One” Nontshinga (11-0, 9KO) will be making his first title defense against mandatory challenger “Filipino Phenom” Regie Suganob (13-0, 4KO). The fight is said to take place in the champion’s country of South Africa on June 16.

According to Rumble Africa Boxing Promotions, an agreement was reached, thus avoiding a purse bid scheduled for April 11.

BREAKING DOWN THE FIGHTER’S STYLE

Filipino Phenom lives up to the name as he is a slick defensive fighter that likes to use angles before blinding his opponents with a flurry of rapid-fire punches. Suganob has been running through the division since his debut in 2018. Furthermore, he earned the right to fight for the title by defeating Mark Vicelles in a title eliminator on February 25. For the first time in his career, Suganob will have to travel away from home into hostile territory.

Special One’s journey in the professional ranks started in 2017. In September 2022, he traveled to Mexico to defeat Hector Flores for the vacant title via split decision. Nontshinga generates a lot of power for his size, which explains the high knockout ratio. He likes to fight at mid-range at a slow methodical pace, behind the jab. Furthermore, he is very good at using feints to get opponents to overcommit before countering with a sharp, overhand right.

To add even more suspense to this fight, the winner could fight in a major unification with unified champion Kenshiro Teraji next.
