Vergil Ortiz Jr. Eyes Possible Title Bout With Tim Tszyu

Top junior middleweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr (19-0, 19KO) is open to the idea of challenging WBO champion Tim “The Soul Taker” Tszyu (24-0, 17KO).

Ortiz Jr faced continuous health challenges in 2023, which sidelined him for the year. Next, he lost an opportunity to possibly win a welterweight title against WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis. Following three postponements, the sanctioning body removed him from the mandatory position.

Undeterred, Team Ortiz Jr regrouped and made a strategic decision to move up in weight, with a scheduled fight against Frederick Lawson on January 6. The teams main goal is to get the Texan career back on track.

Like any fighter, the goal is to be a world champion. The path to a championship in the junior middleweight division goes through unified champion Jermell Charlo or Tszyu.

In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Ortiz expressed excitement about a future bout with the WBO champion.

“That’s a badass fight. That’s an exciting fight right there. I mean with all respect, I would love to fight him.”

A fight later down the line with the Aussie makes perfect sense. Tszyu, known for his willingness to face any opponent, has also indicated a desire to fight in the United States. In his last bout, The Soul Taker successfully defended his title against Brian Mendoza in October 2023.

The prospect of a clash between these undefeated, hard-punching fighters in their prime is truly enticing. However, fans should exercise patience as Ortiz Jr must first deal with Lawson before any concrete plans can be made.

With championship aspirations, Team Ortiz Jr is gearing up for significant developments in 2024.
