Collazo Burning to Go Down as One of Boxing’s Elite Fighters
There has been nothing but superlatives for the reigning WBO minimumweight champion, Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo (9-0, 7 KOs). His team believes the 27-year-old is on a path to greatness in the lower-weight divisions and becoming an illustrious figure in what he calls homeland of Puerto Rico.
Collazo is coming off a third-round stoppage over Reyneris Gutierrez on January 27 in Phoenix, Arizona. Fighting on the undercard of Jaime Munguia versus John Ryder, Collazo wanted to make a statement. He accomplished that in what was a dominant performance against Guitierrez.
GREATNESS IS THE MOTIVE
Team Collazo and co-promoter Oscar De La Hoya, spoke to the boxing media afterward. The Puerto Rican said the following when discussing what he envisions for himself.
“I’m here to make history. I’m here to make big fights and be a legend. Be an icon to my island, to the people who look up to me. I’m starting to build my legacy.”
KEEPING THE MOMENTUM GOING
The Collazo camp feels that the WBO champion is currently the best fighter in Puerto Rico. De La Hoya believes he is a fighter with star potential.
Many boxing observers overlook the minimumweight division. But it’s quietly one of the better weight classes in the sport, as Collazo wants to become a unified champion at 105 pounds in 2024.
Everyone surrounding El Pupilo has a goal of keeping him active with the hopes of putting him in the ring against one of the other world champions in the division by the end of this year.
So far, Collazo has shown himself to be the genuine article. If he gets the big fights he desires and keeps winning, El Pupilo has the talent and potential to go down as a future icon of Puerto Rican fighters, and one of the elite fighters in his era.
