Caleb Plant Resumes his Hunt for a Fight with Jermall Charlo!

If given his choice, former super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (23-3, 14 KO’s) would love to face Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo (34-0, 23 KO’s). The two men have become notorious, if not bitter rivals, due to their run-ins and conversation outside of the ring. Plant believes now is the perfect time for the foes to settle their beef in the squared circle.

Plant has been out of action for nearly one full calendar year. To further complicate matters, Sweethands is also coming off a May 31, 2025 split decision loss to Jose Armando Resendiz. Thankfully for him however, while not coming off a loss, Charlo has also been out of action since last competing on that exact same May 31 fight card as Plant. Plant verbalized his thoughts on the matter with Fight Hype:

“We are trying to lock things in now. That fight is definitely on the table and something that we want to make happen. But we will see, we’ll see. That’s the fight I want. I know he had to obviously pull out of the Munguia fight for a reason. So maybe it takes time, maybe it doesn’t. Either way, I’m going to keep pushing and doing my thing.”

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

The duel still makes sense for several reasons. Despite their brief hiatus from competition, each still enjoys a widely recognized and respected name in the sport. Even better, both are still ranked. Plant holds the #6 (WBA) and #12 (WBC) slots while Charlo is ranked #3 (WBA) and #8 (WBC).

Nevertheless, one obvious elephant in the room is going to be the mental state of former super welterweight champion Jermall Charlo. This is due to his very publicly dealing with his mental health issues over the years. More specifically, in 2025, he withdrew from a duel with Jake LaManna citing mental health issues. He would later reschedule, fight and stop LaManna in the sixth round on May 31, 2025. Unfortunately, Hit Man just pulled out of a prizefight with Armando Resendiz and was quickly swapped out with Jaime Munguia.

Clearly this hop-scotch trend of penning fights and then jumping back out is not appealing to anyone including promoters, networks, the fans or potential future opponents. Only time will tell, but let’s hope their ongoing feud is enough to quiet Charlo’s demons and propel him to actual combat with Plant.
