Rafael Espinoza Claims Rematch Win Over Robeisy Ramirez
In one of the strangest endings you will ever see in a boxing match, Rafael Espinoza (27-0, 23 KOs) retained the WBO featherweight title with a sixth-round stoppage win in a rematch against Robeisy Ramirez (14-3, 9 KOs).
Fighting at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, Ramirez got off to an excellent start as he used his speed and mobility to score early and often during the opening three rounds. However, the defending champion remained persistent, plugging away with uppercuts and body punches in the fourth and fifth.
Then things go weird. In the opening seconds of round six, Espinoza landed a straight right hand on Ramirez’s eye. Suddenly, Ramirez turned his back and stopped fighting! Just like that, the fight was over!
After the fight, the Ramirez camp complained that towards the end of the fifth, a right hand from the champion resulted in their fighter suffering from double vision. However, this is boxing, where fighters are expected to fight through adversity. From the perspective of this reporter, Ramirez outright quit. With the win, Espinoza has aspirations of becoming a unified champion in 2025.
