Rolando Romero Wants an Immediate Rematch with Gervonta Davis
WBA lightweight mandatory challenger Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-1, 12KOs), despite suffering a sixth-round knocked out by WBA Regular champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (27-0, 25KOs), is calling for a rematch.
Romero has been trash talking on social media about arch-rival Davis since 2021. Moreover, he continued to attack the Baltimore power puncher at every possible moment. Coming into this fight, Romero made claims of being able to knockout Tank.
THE STORY OF THE FIGHT
Both fighters promised to come out at the beginning of the fight looking to throw bombs. However, fans waited for the eruption as the beginning of the contest was lackluster. Rolly, competing on the biggest stage of his career, gave a good account of himself.
In the early moments of the fight, he was the aggressor. Rolly came forward behind the jab and landed a good left hook that got Davis’ attention. In being honest, the fight was closer than expected. This author had Romero ahead on the scorecards after the first five rounds.
All of that changed in a blink of an eye in the sixth round. Romero made a crucial mistake coming forward with his chin up and his right hand low. Davis bombed Rolly with a powerful left hook counter. Romero went down to the canvas. Despite beating the count, he never regained his legs and the referee called for the stoppage.
ROMERO WANTS THE REMATCH
Typically, fighters will have second thoughts about going back into the fire after suffering a meme-style knockout. Romero’s confidence remained intact, and during the post-fight press conference.
“I won all six rounds, I won every moment of that fight. I exposed him, and we need to run that shit back.”
Romero was also not shy about calling for a rematch.
“I want Gervonta Davis again, I was winning that fucking fight, and I just got hit with a clean shot. That’s all.
“I had him running like a bitch the entire fight, and like I said, he got a nice shot in. That’s all that happened. He got hurt multiple times, and he ran around. He was terrified of me, and I doubt he’ll do the rematch with me.”
