Errol Spence v Keith Thurman Shortly to Become an Inevitability?

When the sanctioning bodies start talking, more times than not, that means a fight is on the horizon. That could be the case for unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr (28-0, 22 KOs). The name on the marquee across from Spence just may well be ex-unified 147-pound champ Keith Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs).

As 3Kings Boxing previously announced, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman strongly indicated that Thurman will be named as Spence’s WBC mandatory challenger at their upcoming convention, which is happening from November 6 through November 11.

THE POT IS STARTING TO COOK

Spence has posted on social media claiming that he plans to return to action. Word on the street is that the opponent will be one Thurman, with the bout taking place on December 17 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

CONNECTING THE DOTS

If that is the case, you can see the flowchart of events that would lead to such a fight. First, there was hope for a unification clash between Spence and WBO champion Terence Crawford in 2022. Unfortunately, negotiations fizzled and Crawford will defend the WBO strap against David Avanesyan on December 10.

Next, Sulaiman makes his public statements regarding the status of the WBC mandatory. All this is happening as Thurman has been in the background chirping that he wants a fight with Spence. In addition, AT&T Stadium is the home of the Dallas Cowboys. The weekend of December 17, they are playing on the road. It would leave the stadium available and open to stage the fight!

Is this all a mere coincidence? The speculation will surely start to commence. Nothing has been announced by the fighters or their mutual promoter, PBC, but where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing for further updates on this developing situation.
