Billy Joe Saunders calls Canelo Alvarez a cherry picker
Not one to keep his mouth closed, WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14KOs) is at it again! His target this time is Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36KOs).
Not long after the WBC announced that it had ordered the WBC franchise champion at 160 to face Avni Yildirim at 168 for their vacant title did Saunders take to social media to call Alvarez a cherry picker! He points to Alvarez quickly jumping at the opportunity to fight for a title now up for grabs. Yet, by contrast, he was quiet about it when it was being held by former champion David Benavidez (23-0, 20KOs).
HYPOCRITICAL MUCH?!
Saunders isn’t wrong for being critical of Alvarez in terms of his eagerness to fight for the now vacant title. However, where he put his foot in his mouth is the fact he had a golden opportunity to face Alvarez himself. Yet he elected to withdraw from the bout citing insufficient time to train properly. It’s certainly his prerogative to do as he chooses. Although, he has to remember that this wouldn’t have been an option had he elected to stay true to his agreement and fight the man he proclaimed a “cherry picker”.
Saunders is no stranger to talking about fighters in or around his weight division. However, his decision to opt out of fighting the face of boxing for a huge payday damages his case here. It isn’t that Saunders has no case for this decision, but the time has come for him to do his talking in the ring.
