Shawn Porter Bets He Would Have Troubled Floyd Mayweather Jr

Floyd “Money” Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) was dominant as a welterweight champion. However, a 147-pounder he never faced was two-time champion “Showtime” Shawn Porter (31-4-1, 17 KOs). If they had fought, Porter would’ve likely given Mayweather one of the toughest fights of his career.

TAKE A BACKSEAT TO NO ONE

A Mayweather versus Porter fantasy has become a topic on social media. On his podcast “The Porter Way”, Showtime explained why he would be far from a pushover.

“I’ve always been cerebral from a standpoint of understanding the psychology of who’s across from me. I always understood that when it came to Floyd, especially later on in his career, most of the guys that got into the ring with him were beat before the fight even started . . . He wasn’t going to beat me before the fight.”

“There was nothing that ever stopped me from being able to mentally go out there and do what I do . . . You can bet your money that Shawn Porter would go out against Floyd and be Shawn Porter . . . I don’t know what the fight would have looked like, but I wasn’t going to get washed, goddammit.”

MAKING THE CASE

To his point, Porter feared no one. From winning his first world title against Devon Alexander in December 2013 to the final fight of his career against Terence Crawford in November 2021, the Ohio native faced a who’s who at welterweight.

With his physical strength and awkward style, Porter was adept at making opponents fight his fight. He was also excellent at cutting off the ring. If Marcos Maidana had given Mayweather issues during their battle in May 2014, it would have been easy to surmise Porter doing the same. Keep in mind that Porter had faster hands and feet than Maidana.

Mayweather was a boxing savant. With his technical brilliance and high ring IQ, there’s a reason that he is considered one of the greatest fighters of all time. However, Porter was a damn good fighter himself. In boxing, style and temperament count for a lot. Mayweather would not have had an easy night at the office against Porter. Too bad it’s a fight that never occurred.
