Josh Taylor Questions The Mental State of Teofimo Lopez After Racial Comments
WBO junior welterweight champion Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor (19-0, 13KO) tossed out some harsh criticism in the direction of former unified lightweight champion “The Takeover” Teofimo Lopez Jr (18-1, 13KO). Lopez continues to draw heavy backlash from his rant about Top Rank pushing black fighters. His father, Teofimo Lopez Sr, tried doing damage control on his son’s behalf but did not do too well himself.
In addition, the former unified champion mentioned he would be leaving Top Rank after the upcoming fight with Taylor. Yet, his racially tinged comments have some believing Lopez’s mental state is not right.
JOSH TAYLOR BELIEVES TEOFIMO LOPEZ IS NOT ALL THERE
During an interview with Boxing King Media, Taylor added his two cents on the matter, and did not hold back.
“I just think it’s a bit pathetic. ‘Look at me, pay more attention to me, please’. Begging for attention, maybe feels he’s not getting enough attention that he thinks he’s worth . . . trying to race bait basically . . . playing the race card, effectively.”
“I don’t think he’s all there, to be honest . . . I thought it was really random, and really silly, and stupid really.”
“I just thought it was real uncalled for and just fucking stupid.”
The Takeover’s mental state first came under questioning on that fateful day when he lost the title to George Kambosos Jr in November 2021. His mental toughness came under attack a second time after a controversial split decision against Sandor Martin when he was caught on tape asking his team if he still had it.
Lopez needs to fix whatever is messing with his head. Otherwise, it will be a disappointing night against Taylor on June 10.
