Teofimo Lopez Stands Firm On Wanting to Kill Josh Taylor
One-time unified lightweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (18-1, 13KO) claims that he wants to kill WBO junior welterweight champion Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor (19-0, 13KO).
Lopez is hitting the news cycle for making another controversial statement. While speaking with Punsh Drunk Boxing, Lopez made a harsh statement when asked if he is ever sorry for some of the things he says.
“Am I sorry? No, I’m not sorry . . . no one was sorry for me when I was dying, and I was in the ICU . . . this is a kill or be killed sport . . . I said it like it is – I want to kill Josh Taylor . . . People like. ‘well let’s get back to boxing’. I’m like, ‘that is boxing’. This is what we sign up for. You’re probably going to lose your life.”
The Takeover tried to clean up that statement by explaining the reasoning behind his thought process.
“When I fought Loma [Vasyl Lomachenko], I took his heart . . . Taylor, he got no heart. So what can I really take from this man – his life!”
DID LOPEZ CONTRADICT HIMSELF?
In boxing, fighters’ lives are at risk whenever they step in the ring, that is the cold, hard truth. However, Lopez did not have the same energy when WBC junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis mentioned putting him in the hospital.
Although he understood what Prograis meant by the statement, Lopez still bashed the WBC champion for not knowing how to talk. Lopez was already under fire for stating that Top Rank is showing favoritism towards black fighters.
Talking about ending another fighter’s life is frowned upon within the boxing community. It will be interesting to see the response from boxing fans to Lopez’s comment.
