Yordenis Ugas Gives a Clue On When His Fight With Errol Spence Jr Will Take Place
One of the biggest stories fans can look forward to is the return of unified IBF/WBC world welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr (27-0, 21 KOs). He will engage in a unification contest with WBA world ‘super’ champion Yordenis Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs). The question now becomes, when will the fight take place?
In attendance for the PBC pay-per-view at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, Ugas provided some insight during a ringside interview.
“We are targeting March or April”.
WHAT LEAD TO THIS FIGHT
This contest came to be for multiple reasons. Ugas called for the fight following an upset win over Manny Pacquiao in August 2021. In December 2021, a series of developments took place involving the WBA. The WBA president, Gilberto Mendoza, gave the okay for Ugas to face Spence. That was coupled with WBA mandatory welterweight contender Eimantas Staniosis agreeing to step aside.
INTRIGUING FOR MANY REASONS
For Spence, this will be his first outing since defending the titles against former two-division world champion Danny Garcia in December of 2020. He has been idle recovering from a detached retina while preparing to fight Pacquiao. Ironically, Ugas came in as a late replacement for the injured Spence and took advantage of the opportunity to defeat Pacquiao.
It’s good news for the fans that the match is happening relatively soon. On paper, it figures to be a battle of highly skilled fighters. Spence is considered the bigger puncher and more active fighter. Ugas is more defensive and a craftsman.
