Vasiliy Lomachenko response to the brash Teofimo Lopez

Checkout Teofiom Lopez’ comments about Lomachenko here!

Lightweight Teofimo Lopez Jr (12-0, 10KO) is arguably the best prospect in world and is one of the more talked about fighters in boxing. The precocious 21 year-old from Brooklyn has the talent and the personality to be a star!

Lately, Lopez has been pretty chatty in personal interviews, as well as on social media. In particular, regarding his status in the sport and how he would fare against other fighters in his division.

His talent and ambition has lead to mentions of the likes of current unified champion, Vasiliy Lomachenko; a fighter who, in the minds of many, is the current pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.

During interviews following his recent win over Diego Magdaleno, Lopez and his dad Teofimo Sr have said emphatically that not only would they love to fight Lomacheko, but feel they would make “easy work” of him.

Lopez Sr has publicly declared that if his son were to get in the ring with Lomachenko, he would “take his head off,” claiming that the unified champion is deteriorating as a fighter. Lopez Jr. has also claimed he would stop Lomachenko.

Lomachenko Responds

During a recent interview, Lomachenko gave his opinion on the boasts of Lopez.

“I think what they’re doing is just to PR themselves off my name. They’re talking and they’re trying to do what Conor McGregor did to Floyd Mayweather.

This is their strategy and it’s too soon for me to even talk about him. He has to make some big moves in boxing and so far, they haven’t done anything as far as I can see. If that fight will happen, I am more than willing to share the ring with him.”

Furthermore, when asked would he approach a possible fight against Teofimo Lopez Jr with mean intentions and become “NoMasChenko”:

“[…] because I said something like that to my team. I will do everything I can, and I will not be surprised at all if he quits in the middle of the fight.”

He is not only keeping an eye on Lopez., he is sending out a warning to the young upstart to be careful what you wish for. The interesting angle here is that both fighters are promoted by Top Rank. Given that fact, you could very well see this fight down the line.

Lomachenko is right to say Lopez needs prove himself first and do something significant to warrant that kind of fight. However, if Lopez is the fighter we believe him to be, he’s more than capable of earning this fight based off of skill.

Let’s face it, given the talent of both men, who wouldn’t be interested in that potential match-up?
