Eimantas Stanionis vs Vergil Ortiz Postponed A Third Time as Ortiz Falls Ill
Highly-ranked welterweight Vergil Ortiz (19-0, 19 KOs) has withdrawn from his July 8 contest against reigning WBA Regular welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9 KOs). Ortiz’s promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, made the announcement via social media.
3kingsboxing.com has learned that Ortiz was hospitalized overnight due to an undisclosed medical emergency. It’s the third time that the Stanionis – Ortiz has been postponed. They were to fight on March 18, but Stanionis had to pull out due to an emergency appendectomy surgery.
The fight was rescheduled for April 29. But unfortunately, Ortiz was forced to withdraw due to his medical condition, rhabdomyolysis.
CAUSE FOR CONCERN
For Ortiz, this is the third time he has pulled out of a fight due to illness. In March 2022, the same medical condition forced the 25-year-old native of Dallas, Texas to pull out of a fight with Michael McKinson.
As of this writing, it’s unknown if rhabdomyolysis was the cause of this recent setback. At the very least, one has to be concerned about the health of Ortiz. Stay tuned to 3kingsboxing.com for further updates on the status of the Texan.
The rest of the card will proceed as scheduled. The chief undercard bout between hotshot lightweight prospect Floyd Schofield Jr and Lydell Rhodes will now be the main event.
