Dina Thorslund Beats Niorkis Carreno, but What’s Next?
In her latest tour of duty, WBO bantamweight champion Dina Thorslund (18-0, 7 KO’s) successfully staged the sixth defense of her belt. Thorslund accomplished this by beating Niorkis Carreno (22-3, 17 KO’s) by a comfortably wide unanimous decision. With the win, the next question suddenly shifts to: what’s next for Thorslund?
There is the possibility that she presses for a unification match with WBA bantamweight champion Jamie Mitchell. Yet, at the moment, it appears that Mitchell is more invested in staging a rematch with in-ring rival Shannon Courtenay. Mitchell initially traveled to the Echo Arena in Liverpool to best Courtenay to pluck up the vacant WBA strap. Now, she’d love to run the fight back in the states.
So, if not Mitchell, there is also the popular and newly crowned IBF 118-pound champion Ebanie Bridges (8-1, 3 KO’s) to consider. The bubbly Australian boxer became champion by lifting the IBF title off of Maria Cecilia Roman’s hands back on March 26. Unfortunately for Thorslund, it looks like Shannon Courtney is also Bridges’ main focus right now.
Bridges dropped a fairly wide unanimous decision loss to Courtenay back on April 10, 2021. Consequently the Australian fighter has lusted for revenge ever since. In the end, it will certainly be interesting to see who Thorslund eventually does pen a bout with next.
