Deontay Wilder Versus Anthony Joshua Is Still Worth Making

In a heavyweight showdown between two fighters at the end of their careers, Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (45-4-1, 43KO) defeated Derek “War” Chisora (36-14, 23KO) by split decision. Now, The Bronze Bomber versus Anthony Joshua (29-4, 26KO) could finally happen.

For some reason, Wilder didn’t use the jab and allowed Chisora to land repeated overhand rights. Yet, he hurt the elder stateman and scored two knockdowns in the fight. Refusing to go away, Chisora continued to come forward, looking to land the right hand.

After going life and death for twelve rounds, one judge scored it 115-112 for Chisora, with the other two giving it to Wilder, 115-111 and 115-113. The question remains: what is next for both fighters?

War claims this was the last hurrah and is positioned at the #2 slot by the IBF. However, he has clearly aged from taking so many shots, and should ride off into retirement. He has given this sport so much and deserves all the praise from the boxing community.

Wilder looked gun-shy and hasn’t improved, offensively or defensively. Yet, The Alabama hard-hitter facing Joshua is still appealing to fans. Moreover, the financial implications would be huge, if they fought in the United Kingdom. It’s worth mentioning the one-time WBC champion suffered a broken hand and could be out for a while.

During an intermission interview, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, expressed the possibility of the fight.

“If Deontay Wilder wins in style tonight, it opens up a fight with Anthony Joshua. as well.”
