Leigh Wood Responds Critically to Callout by Kiko Martinez
Seems like these days regular WBA featherweight champion “Leigh-thal” Leigh Wood (26-2, 16 KO’s) is a man of high interest. His last foe, Olympic darling Mick Conlan, would certainly love a piece of payback for being knocked out and through the ropes earlier this year. The WBA is talking about repossessing his title unless he can prove his recent injury. His last would-be opponent, Mauricio Lara, is dying to trade leather and calling him a coward. And now, veteran pugilist Kiko “La Sensacion” Martinez (44-11-2, 2 KO’s) is determined to sock him in the face.

While competing on the undercard of the Taylor vs Carabajal main event, Martinez took on and stopped the much fresher Jordan Gill. In just four short rounds La Sensacion bruised, badly bloodied and dropped Gill four times. Despite its brevity, the brutality being inflicted forced Gill’s corner to throw in a white towel of mercy. In the direct aftermath of the prizefight, Martinez made it very clear that he wanted Leigh Wood next.
DECORUM OVER DETONATION?
When Wood responded to La Sensacion’s callout, it was somewhat odd. Rather than express his intent to fight or not fight with the Spaniard, Leigh-thal only had critiques for his in-ring antics.
Would Wood pass up a fight solely based on the man tugging on his testes after the fight? Was it that outrageous? Who knows? Either way, as the walls close in on Leigh-thal, the next several weeks and months should be very busy and interesting. Will he rectify his situation with the WBA or be stripped? Will he reschedule and face Lara next as previously promised? Or, will he attempt to forcibly teach Martinez some proper respect in his next outing? While we don’t have these answers, thankfully 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news!
