Its Time for 105-Pound Unified Champion Oscar Collazo to Exit the Division

Unified minimumweight champion Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo is regarded by an overwhelming majority of boxing pundits as the best fighter at 105 pounds. The time has come for the pride of Puerto Rico to take his career to the next level, move up in weight, and begin a quest to conquer another division.

On June 20, Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs) will defend his world titles against Mexico’s Neider Valdez in Oceanside, California. A late replacement for Joey Canoy, Valdez enters the bout as an unranked and largely unheralded challenger. There are no guarantees in boxing. Still, most observers expect the champion to retain his belts.

Regardless of the outcome, Collazo should begin seriously considering what comes next. Since capturing a world title in May 2023, El Pupilo has remained committed to becoming the undisputed champion at minimumweight. However, that goal has proven difficult to achieve.

A unification showdown with IBF champion Pedro Taduran would be appealing. However, there is no assurance that their camps can reach an agreement. Given that uncertainty, Collazo should start preparing for a move up in weight.

GREATER CHALLENGES LIE AHEAD

With a large frame for a minimumweight, the Puerto Rican appears physically capable of making the transition. One intriguing possibility would be a showdown with fellow Puerto Rican and unified junior flyweight champion Rene Santiago. The two are friends outside the ring, yet both have acknowledged the possibility of facing one another someday. Such a bout would be a major event in Puerto Rico, though financial considerations would likely play a significant role in making it happen.

Another option would be bypassing 108 pounds altogether and moving directly to flyweight. Potential opponents could include unified champion Ricardo Sandoval, IBF titleholder Masamichi Yabuki, or hard-hitting WBO champion Anthony Olascuaga. Of those possibilities, a clash with Olascuaga could be particularly entertaining due to the aggressive styles both men bring into the ring. Just as importantly, opportunities at 108 or 112 pounds would likely provide Collazo with bigger paydays than anything currently available at minimumweight.

Whatever Collazo decides after facing Valdez, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: his pursuit of undisputed glory at 105 pounds may have reached a dead end. The division has little left to offer him. The next chapter of his career should be written in a heavier weight class.
