Akhmadaliev to Choose Between Redemption or New Frontiers

One-time unified junior featherweight champion Murodjon “MJ” Akhmadaliev remains one of the most respected fighters in boxing’s lower-weight divisions. Now on the comeback trail, the Uzbek standout hopes to position himself for another world title run, whether at 122 pounds or in the featherweight division.

In his first appearance since suffering a defeat to undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue in September 2025, Akhmadaliev (15-2, 12 KOs) delivered an impressive fourth-round stoppage victory over Hegly Mosqueda (27-2, 20 KOs) at the Humo Arena in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

From the opening bell, Akhmadaliev controlled the action, stalking Mosqueda and breaking him down with sharp combinations. Early in the fourth round, a straight left hand sent Mosqueda to the canvas. With less than a minute remaining in the round, MJ unleashed another barrage of punches that dropped his opponent for a second time – prompting the referee to wave off the contest.

WHERE DOES AKHMADALIEV GO FROM HERE?

The future of Akhmadaliev remains one of the more intriguing storylines in the sport’s lighter weight classes. Heading into the fight, Akhmadaliev made it clear that his preferred option is another world title opportunity at junior featherweight. The challenge, however, is obvious. As long as Inoue remains atop the division, meaningful title opportunities may be difficult to secure.

Recognizing that reality, Akhmadaliev has also expressed a willingness to move up to featherweight. At 31 years old, the timing may be ideal. Unlike the junior featherweight division, featherweight currently lacks a dominant, long-reigning champion, potentially creating a clearer path back to championship status.

That leaves Akhmadaliev with a significant decision. He can remain patient at 122 pounds and hope another opportunity materializes, particularly if Inoue eventually vacates the division. Alternatively, he can test himself immediately at 126 pounds, where fresh matchups and title opportunities may be more readily available.

With Inoue having stated his intention to move to featherweight in 2027, waiting could ultimately pay off. Yet for a fighter still operating near his peak, the lure of pursuing immediate championship opportunities at featherweight may prove too difficult to ignore.

Either way, Akhmadaliev’s dominant return victory showed that he remains a dangerous contender and a legitimate threat to any champion between 122 and 126 pounds.
