Jerwin Ancajas returns to the ring April 10 to face mandatory challenger Jonathan Javier Gonzalez

IBF super flyweight Jerwin Ancajas (31-1-2, 22 KOs) is the longest-reigning world champion in the division. However, there is a problem. Among the world champions at 115-pounds, he is the one fighter whose career has yet to make an upward swing.

He has not fought since a sixth-round TKO over Miguel Gonzalez in Puebla, Mexico in December 2019. After not fighting in 2020, Ancajas returns to the ring April 10 to face mandatory challenger Jonathan Javier Gonzalez (22-1, 16 KOs). The bout will open a card headlined by a welterweight contest between Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Sergey Lipinets. It will take place at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut and airs live on SHOWTIME.

The champ is also making a major change outside of the ring. His handler, Sean Gibbons, president of MP Promotions, revealed to the Philippines Daily Inquirer that Ancajas has left Top Rank and signed with PBC.

“Jerwin is fighting with PBC. He is with PBC as long as they want him.”

The 29-year-year-old from Panabo City, Davao del Norte, Philippines has held the IBF world title since September 2016. Still, the talented southpaw has yet to engage in a high-profile match against the elite fighters in his weight class.

On March 13, we witnessed a unification bout between WBC World super flyweight champ Juan Francisco Estrada and WBA ‘Super’ super flyweight champion, Roman Gonzalez. Estrada ended up winning by split decision.

Ancajas’ goal is to become the undisputed champion at 115-pounds. Moving on from Top Rank to PBC may have been due to frustration over not getting a big fight. Whether he put himself in a better position is to be determined. According to Gibbons, Ancajas wants a showdown against the newly crowned unified champion, Estrada.
