Demetrius Andrade to Begin A New Campaign at 168 in 2023
Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (31-0, 19 KOs) will at long last return to the ring in 2023. At a news conference for the upcoming Gervonta Davis-Hector Garcia fight on January 7 in Washington, DC, it was announced that he will face Demond Nicholson (26-4-1, 22 KOs) in a ten-round super middleweight contest.
READY TO GET BACK TO WORK
A two-division champion, Boo Boo has been out of action since a second-round stoppage of Jason Quigley in November 2021. When asked about the upcoming fight by the boxing media, Andrade spoke about how he feels to be fighting again and why he made the decision to go to 168.
“154, 160, I did my thing there. You don’t get any younger. I can’t make 160 anymore, so I want to move on to this new journey and make it happen.”
2022 has been a disastrous year Andrade. He was scheduled to fight Zach Parker for the WBO interim title at 168 in May 2022 until that bout was postponed when Andrade suffered an injured shoulder. Attempts to reschedule fell down the tubes. Boo Boo also was not retained by his former promoter, Matchroom, and then vacated the WBO middleweight title after declining a title defense against then-mandatory challenger Janibek Alimkhanuly.
Now healthy and looking to get back on the good foot, the talented southpaw from Providence, Rhode Island faces Nicholson, who has won his last three fights since a unanimous decision loss to Edgar Berlanga in April 2021. Andrade hopes a win springboards him into fights against two-time WBC 168-pound champ David Benavidez or ex-IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant. Nicholson believes a victory over Andrade moves him closer to a world title shot.
