David Benavidez Welcomes Opetaia Fight; Dismisses Zuffa Belt

Unified cruiserweight champion “The Mexican Monster” David Benavidez likes the idea of facing two-time IBF champion Jai Opetaia. In addition, he has zero interest in fighting for the Australian’s meaningless Zuffa Belt.

After tearing through former champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in six quick rounds on May 2, Benavidez wasted little time drumming up interest in facing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez again. He has been calling out the Mexican superstar for what seems like forever. Honestly, that fight will never happen, especially with Alvarez competing at 168 pounds.

Benavidez is a champion at 175 pounds and cruiserweight, Canelo won’t pursue the fight with money on the table at super middleweight. Opetaia quickly threw his name in the hat with a message to El Monstruo via social media.

WHY SIGNING WITH ZUFFA WAS COSTLY

During the post-fight interview with the media, Benavidez expressed interest in the fight but questioned why Opetaia joined Zuffa.

“I think that’s the biggest fight in the world, especially at this weight division. That’s definitely the fight I want. Like I said, I’m not scared of nobody – it’s Monstruo world… I don’t know why he went to Zuffa. We could’ve made the fight right after this one.”

“I’m not going to go over there and fight for a Zuffa title. I think that would be a great fight, probably in the future…I think he has to come back over here to make these fights happen, cause we can’t make fights with Zuffa.”

Considering that Opetaia was stripped of the IBF title, Benavidez mirrored what 3Kings Boxing has been saying. Make no mistake about it – he has created the biggest buzz around the cruiserweight division since the days of Oleksandr Usyk.

Let’s pray that the top brass at PBC and Zuffa can work together for the good of the sport.
