Jaime Munguia Will Leverage WBA Title to Rematch Canelo
Newly crowned WBA 168-pound champion Jaime Munguia (46-2, 35 KO’s) handily defeated Armando “Toro” Resendiz (16-3, 11 KO’s) by way of unanimous decision. Munguia is one step closer to avenging a 2024 defeat in a rematch with multi-divisional champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
This version of Munguia fought totally different from what fans are used to seeing. The Mexican looked sharp, controlled the tempo, and showed an improved ring IQ. Munguia dominated the fight to the tune of 120-108, 119-109, and 117-111. He is now a top player in the division with a big fight looming in the background.
THE MOST LIKELY SCENARIO IS A REMATCH
If Team Munguia wants a unification next, they could look to challenge the very dangerous IBF champion Osleys “El Tornado” Iglesias next. Or maybe they will target the winner of Hamzah Sheeraz vs Alem Begic on May 23.
The smart money is to wait for the results of WBC champion Christian “Solide” Mbilli vs Canelo in September. Mbilli is coming off a hard-fought draw versus Lester Martinez in September 2025. Despite the draw, the WBC elevated him from interim to full champion.
The boxing community was shocked when Munguia got stopped by unknown Bruno Surace in 2024. Then the WBA champion was heavily criticized for a failed PED test after winning the rematch. With Team Munguia back in the hunt for another huge payday, no one should be surprised if they wait to see if Canelo is victorious before seeking a unification.
