Germaine Brown Claims English Super Middleweight Title from Charlie Schofield

An all-British showdown happened at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, as Charlie Schofield (17-2, 1 KO) took on Germaine Brown (12-0, 3 KOs) for the BBBofC English super middleweight title. Schofield entered as the defending BBBofC 168 pound champ, winning the then-vacant title with a unanimous decision win over Mickey Ellison in June of 2021.

His first defense came against Brown, who was stepping up in competition. The challenger won the vacant British Southern Area super middleweight title with a fourth-round stoppage over Sam Smith in November of 2019. Brown was looking to elevate from a local area fighter to a champ.

OFF TO A FAST START

Brown came out confidently, taking the fight to the taller, 6’3” opponent. He found success early with right hands to the body and left hooks to the head.

Schofield tried to create distance in hopes of getting his shots off. However, he was unable to find his rhythm in the early rounds. The defending English champ had trouble getting his jab going, seeming unsure how to keep the aggressive Brown at bay. Schofield’s ribs were red from the punishment at the end of round four.

GETTING DOMINATED

Schofield tried to adjust in the middle rounds by fighting more in the center of the ring. But, his punches were inaccurate. Brown was able to duck the shots, then counter with combinations. The longer the fight went, Schofield’s body language became more and more negative. He seemed to have no answers to what he was dealing with in there.

Brown kept the momentum going and ran away with this one. The judges rewarded his effort scoring the fight for him by clear-cut unanimous decision (98-98-2, 99-92, 98-92). The winner outfought and outworked Schofield from the opening bell and is now the new BBBofC English champion. He is someone to keep tabs on in the UK boxing circles moving forward.
