Canelo Alvarez Targets Dmitry Bivol Rematch After Dominating John Ryder

Following wrist surgery and rehab, undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (58-3-2, 39 KO’s) made a successful return to the ring. He did so by systematically outpointing UK challenger John “Gorilla” Ryder (32-6, 18 KO’s). The outcome was about as surprising as seeing John Wick shoot someone. Going into the fight, outside of his corner and mother, there were precious few individuals giving Ryder any reasonable shot at victory.

Due to this reality, there was generally greater anticipation for Canelo’s post-fight commentary and hopeful call-out. As expected, over the first half of the fight, the Mexican delighted the crowd by bloodying, dropping and generally dominating Ryder. To his credit though, Gorilla showed a ton of heart by surviving to hear the final bell and landed his fair share of leather during the second half of the bout. As a result of his lasting the limit however, there will inevitably be those boxing fans who will say that Canelo is slipping.

SAME OLD SONG

When the post-fight interview mic was thrust in his face, Canelo did not deviate from his recent talking points.

“Everybody knows we want [Dmitry] Bivol, the rematch we’ve been wanting. If the fight with Bivol not happening, then we’ll see. I’m able to fight everybody. ”

When asked if he still wanted to travel back up to 175-pounds, Alvarez held firm.

“Yeah! Same rules, same fans, same everything.”

MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY!

It will be interesting to see if Canelo gets the rematch that he’s been craving. While Super WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (21-0, 11 KO’s) has shown some desire to face Alvarez again, it’s not been overwhelming. In fact, Bivol openly stated that he’d be available only if he could move down and challenge for the redhead’s super middleweight titles.

Clearly this looms as a huge potential problem to jam up future negotiations. So it will be revealing to see how, or if, the two camps can navigate around this glaring roadblock. Thankfully, no matter what happens, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news.
