WIlliam Scull Uncovers Old Flaw of Canelo Alvarez
Although he defeated one-time super middleweight champion William Scull, undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez didn’t make the proper adjustment in the fight. Fans and pundits weren’t pleased with the fight, as Scull was blamed for it being boring. However, Canelo should receive criticism for not cutting off the ring, which raises concerns about his ring IQ. The Mexican is considered a top-five pound-for-pound fighter but continues to struggle against boxers who can move.
We have seen pound-for-pound champions like Oleksandr Usyk, Terence Crawford, Naoya Inoue, and Dmitry Bivol make adjustments in real-time. In addition, they find ways to take away their opponent’s strength.
In fairness, the undisputed champion has stopped slick boxers in the past such as Caleb Plant and Billy Joe Saunders. But he struggled with their movement and defense prior to scoring the knockout.
Canelo’s repeated issues with tall, rangy fighters should come under more scrutiny, but his popularity overshadows his flaws. This raises the question: is the undisputed champion a great fighter or just a very good fighter with a large fanbase?
