Christian Duran’s Punching Power Proves To Be Too Much For Jorge Sanchez!
Rising welterweight Mexican prospect Jorge Perez Sanchez (13-0, 5ko) put a lot on the line against fellow countryman Christian Alan Gomez Duran (20-2-1, 18ko).
Gomez comes into the fight with a four-fight win streak. All of them ending by knockout. He is a straightforward, tough as nails fighter that can change the course of a fight with one punch.
Sanchez is a late bloomer in the sport after serving in the Mexican military. At the age of 33, he is on the fast track. A good boxer that can use his feet to create angles and use the jab to keep the fight at mid-range, Sanchez will look to have a breakout performance.
Duran proved to be the kind of fighter Sanchez would not have an impressive performance against.
Gomez came out of the gate started throwing hard punches to test the spirit of the elder opponent. In the second round, Sanchez made the mistake of trying to trade and he got hurt by a straight right hand before being put on the canvas from an overhand right.
Over the next few rounds, Sanchez made the adjustment and start using his legs to create space and beat the body of Gomez. He also used the jab more with a straight right hand to the body, keeping the stronger puncher off balance.
Sanchez was a fighting in cruiser control going into the seventh round. However, Gomez landed another thunderous right hand that put the former soldier in survival mode. Sanchez barely made it out of the round after being hit with everything from Gomez’ arsenal.
The elder fighter bounced back again in the eighth fighting smart, and he went back to the body taking some steam out of the hard puncher. Then something strange happened at the end of the round. Sanchez’ corner was under the impression the fight was over and the scorecards would be read. They started taking the tape off the gloves before realizing they were in a ten-round fight! This could have been an indication they were hoping the fight could end sooner without having to stop it!
Learning they had two more rounds to go proved to be bad news for Sanchez’ corner. Gomez was able to get a second wind and in the ninth round, landed a counter left hook the turned the legs of Sanchez into spaghetti! He immediately jumped on his hurt opponent with a beautiful right uppercut followed up by a right hook. Sanchez went face-first into the canvas, and the referee did not hesitate to call for the stoppage.
With this upset, Gomez hands Sanchez the first loss of his career before moving on to bigger opportunities.
