Kim Clavel v Jessica Nery Plata Delay Pushes Back Undisputed

The boxing gods have struck again! Canadian boxing fans received a punch to the liver with news of a postponed unification bout between WBC junior flyweight champion Kim Clavel (16-0, 3KO) and WBA champion Jessica Nery Plata’s (28-2, 3KO). With the fight officially on hold, how does this affect a possible undisputed showdown?

Clavel’s promoter, Yvon Michel of the Canadian-based GYM Promotion, posted the news across social media. The cancellation is due to the WBC champion’s health issues.

“Following the recommendation of Dr. Francis Fontaine concerning the state of health of Kim Clavel, we are forced to postpone the unification.”

Both champions were all-set to put their belts on the line on December 1. It seems they will have to wait, as Michel followed up with another post indicating the new date will be January 23, 2023. Clavel felt compelled to thank Michel for putting her health first.

A HUGE DOMINO EFFECT

This marks the second time the WBC champion had to postpone a fight due to illness. In April, she contracted COVID-19, putting the brakes on the battle with WBC champion Yesenia Gomez. Clavel won the title in dominating fashion against Yesenia Gomez on July 29. Shortly after being victorious, 3Kings Boxing suggested that a unification between the two champions could be next.

One of the domino effects of the fight postponement until 2023 is what this does to the decision of the two-divisional unified champion, Yokasta Valle. On November 27, Valle, also a unified minimumweight champion, was given ten days by the WBO to figure out which division she will remain champion in. Some inside the boxing community speculate she could be lured into going back down to minimumweight for a fight with former stablemate and two-divisional champion Seniesa Estrada.

With undisputed so close, it now looks to be so far away.
