Blair Cobbs v Maurice Hooker Survival Match Set for August 6
For their next at bat, welterweight boxers Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker (27-2-3, 18 KO’s) and Blair “The Flair” Cobbs (15-1-1, 10 KO’s) will square off in a must-win battle. This is due to both men coming off of losses in their last prizefight. Hooker was toppled by highly touted 147-pound contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. It was the second loss, and second by knockout, of his career. Similarly, Cobbs was stopped by Alexis Rocha after talking more trash than the law should allow. Now, on the August 6 Ortiz Jr versus McKinson undercard, Cobbs and Hooker will fight for professional relevancy.
DO OR DIE!
To his credit, Hooker did capture a full world title when he beat Terry Flanagan to capture the vacant WBO super lightweight title. Mighty Mo would defend it twice before getting stopped by Jose Carlos Ramirez. The match versus Ramirez would be his last in the division. In his debut in the welterweight division, Hooker easily ran through and knocked out Uriel Perez. Mighty Mo would sit out of action for nearly a year and a half before being knocked off by Ortiz Jr. Now, this bout versus Cobbs is coming nearly 18-months after this dustup with Ortiz Jr.
Unlike Hooker, Blair Cobbs, 32, has always been something of an anomaly in the sport. Without question, the most well-known trait associated with Cobbs is his fascination with pro-wrestler Ric Flair. This is clearly who he takes his persona from and the reason why he ends so many sentences with: “wooooooooo!” Cobbs is also trained by legendary chief second Freddy Roach. Outside of his coach, there is not all that much notable to highlight about his professional career. Having already been publicly labeled a joke by fighters such as Jaron Ennis and unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr, Cobbs simply cannot afford to take another loss at this time.
