Jezreel Corrales and Anselmo Moreno Keep Their Title Hopes Alive
Panama City hosted two of its former world champions on a path towards championship glory. Former WBA junior lightweight champions Jezreel “El Invisible” Corrales (25-4, 10 KO’s) and Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno (41-6-1, 13 KO’s) fought in front of the hometown fans. Each got the victory in their respective fights, offering fans hope of one more shot at championship gold.
In 2020, El Invisible would suffer a third career defeat to then hot contender Chris Colbert. He has been on a three-fight winning streak, including a recent lightweight assignment against undefeated Miguel Madueno (27-1, 25 KO’s).
The fight was kind of ugly as Corrales was knocked down early in the contest and both fighters got deducted a point. The former used his experience to gain control of the middle rounds, fighting off the aggression of the younger challenger before another point deduction in the eighth. Currently ranked #8 by the WBA, Corrales is ready to strike in a stacked division.
THE ELDER STATESMAN IS STILL WINNING
Former WBA bantamweight champion Moreno on the other hand is a little long in the tooth. The 36-year-old Panamanian still holds the record for being the longest-reigning bantamweight champion, spanning from 2008 until 2014. He has been on a five-fight win streak since 2017. In his latest assignment, the WBA #3 rated featherweight scored a tenth-round stoppage over subpar opponent Gustavo Pina Melgar (10-3-2, 5 KO’s).
Chemito sits in a unique position with the possibility of challenging for a championship this year. WBA Regular champion Leigh Wood ended his war with number one challenger Michael Conlan via a brutal knockout. Moreno could be next to challenge Wood. Another option is a fight with WBA Super champion Leo Santa Cruz.
Whatever happens next for either of these two former champions, 3Kings Boxing will provide the latest updates.
