Terence Crawford Optimistic on Fighting Errol Spence in May 2023!
Have the lights flickered out on a showdown between Terence Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs) and unified champ Errol Spence (28-0, 22 KOs)? On December 10, Crawford returns to his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska to defend the WBO welterweight title against David Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17 KOs).
NOT ALL HOPE IS LOST
What’s foremost on the mind of many is a battle with Spence. During an exclusive interview on Thaboxingvoice podcast, Bud was asked if he’s still interested in facing the unified welterweight champion. According to Crawford, that potential matchup is on his agenda.
“I believe after this fight, we go back to the drawing board, and hopefully we can secure the fight with me and Spence . . . If he don’t have anything lined up, then we can go right into it and fingers crossed, we can secure a date and we can get it on.”
Crawford went on to say he envisions a fight with Spence happening in May 2023. There was an expectation that the two reigning champions at 147 would square off for undisputed status in 2022. The two men agreed in principle to terms for a match on November 19 until contract negotiations got bogged down, and Crawford decided to move on to fight Avanesyan.
Many fans are bitterly disappointed that they could not hammer out a deal. When the WBO champ claimed his legacy would not be affected if he didn’t face Spence, quite a few hardcore heads were further incensed. But, these latest statements give a ray of hope.
Crawford – Spence is arguably the best matchup in the sport, regardless of weight. A contest between two of the top five fighters pound for pound is as good as it gets. It would attract plenty of interest from the mainstream sports realm. Crawford is hopeful that the bout finally happens. All boxing enthusiasts share his sentiment.
