David Benavidez vs David Morrell Fight Agreement in Place for Fall Pay-Per-View
Two of the very best in the super middleweight division are WBC Interim champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) and reigning WBA Regular champion David Morrell (9-0, 8 KOs). It appears they are going to fight one another. According to Fight Freaks Media, they’ve agreed in principle to a matchup in either October or November on Showtime pay-per-view.
NOT A SURPRISE
In many ways, this bout was an inevitability. There have been ongoing discussions between the two parties throughout 2023. Benavidez’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, previously informed 3kingsboxing.com that he had a contract on hand for a fight with Morrell.
But Team Benavidez wanted to first try and land a fight with undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Unfortunately, even with Canelo being offered nearly $50 million for the fight, negotiations went nowhere. With Canelo seeking other options, Lewkowicz decided to move on and pursue other matchups for his fighter.
The Mexican Monster hasn’t fought since a unanimous decision victory over former IBF champion Caleb Plant in March 2023. Morrell is coming off a devastating first-round knockout against Yamaguchi Falcao in April 2023.
Benavidez believes he’s the best at 168. Morrell thinks he has the tools in his arsenal to topple the Interim champion. On paper, it has the makings to be an outstanding battle. Due to the fact that both fight for PBC, there should not be any difficulty finalizing the matchup. Stay tuned to 3kingsboxing.com for any additional updates.
