Devin Haney wants to knockout Gamboa
WBC lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (24-0, 15ko) will be making a second defense of the title against former unified featherweight champion Yuriokis “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” Gamboa (38-3, 18ko). This bout is set to take place on November 7. However, many inside the boxing community are not exactly blown away by this fight. One of the main reasons is because the former unified champion is coming off a loss suffered at the hands of two-divisional champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (24-0, 23ko), back in 2019. Furthermore, the Cuban fighter also will be fighting in a tough fight after having surgery to repair his right Achilles tendon, an injury suffered in the Davis fight.
A STATEMENT IS NEEDED
Now, there are quite a few boxing enthusiasts that feel this fight does not do much at all for Haney, and he will need to make a statement in this fight in hopes of luring unified champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (16-0, 12ko) into the ring. Understanding the importance of the situation, the WBC champion makes it clear the intent to dominate his opponent.
“Yeah, that’s the key to this fight. I want to go in there and make a statement, I want to beat Gamboa worst than he’s ever been beat before. He’s been in there with a lot of top guys, and he’s given them the fight of their lives or the hardest test. I want to go in there and pitch a shutout. I want the world to know that I am on a totally different level.”
Devin Haney went even further in saying that a stoppage is the best way to win, but also realizes that he will need to be careful in going about the business in the ring against such a seasoned veteran like Gamboa.
“Of course, a stoppage or knockout is the best way to win in boxing. That would be amazing if I go in there and knock Gamboa out, especially if it happens early, but I know that Gamboa is a crafty opponent. He’s not going to go out easy, he’s going to fight to the finish. So, I have to be mindful of that.”
Devin Haney once again doubled down with assertiveness that the plan is to look impressive in all facets.
“I want to make a statement. Whether it’s an early stoppage, a late stoppage, or just a twelve round beatdown, I want to make a statement.”
