Sunny Edwards Goes After Julio Cesar Martinez On Carmona Decision
IBF flyweight champion “Showtime” Sunny Edwards (19-0, 4KO) is turning up the pressure on WBC champion “El Rey” Julio Cesar Martinez. It is no secret that Edwards wants a unification fight with Martinez. Showtime called out the rival champion after witnessing El Rey receive what many fans believe was a gift decision victory over unknown Samuel Carmona.
Edwards wants to defend the family honor as Martinez beat his brother, Charlie Edwards, before the decision was overturned and ruled a no contest. He has been on the heels of the WBC champion since winning the title against Moruti Mthalane in 2021.
Fast forward to 2022, Edwards has not faltered in his pursuit of unification. So, it is of no surprise he was paying close attention to Martinez’s fight with Carmona on December 3.
EDWARDS WAS NOT SURPRISED BY MARTINEZ’S VICTORY
In front of a pro-Mexican crowd in Glendale, Arizona, El Rey returned to the ring after taking a one-sided beating from multi-divisional champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez on March 5. Team Martinez picked Carmona thinking it would be a safe fight to get the champion back into the win column.
Martinez was getting completely out-boxed throughout the fight. Furthermore, he was fortunate to get back into the fight with Carmona injuring his right hand. In short, the WBC champion retained the title via two absurd scorecards of 117-111 and 116-112.
Edwards was not shocked by the bad scorecards and expressed that Carmona did not have a chance with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn protecting the WBC champion.
