Devin Haney has a special request for the WBC
WBC world lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (27-0, 15ko) has grown tired of hearing the Franchise is the bigger title. Frustrated, The Dream took to social media with a special request for WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
The franchise belt has caused all kinds of confusion. It is to the point that Sulaiman openly admitted that the rules even confuse him. One of the first rules was the belt could not change hands and it was not part of being undisputed. However, the WBC quickly changed that rule for the fight between then unified lightweight champion Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko and IBF champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez in 2020. Furthermore, on the WBC website, they do not even show the franchise champion, but acknowledge the WBC champion, causing even more confusion.
Equally important, the other three governing sanctioning bodies do not recognize the Franchise champion. They list only the holder of the WBC championship as the true champion of the division. Lopez, after defeating Lomachenko, carried on as if he was an undisputed champion despite the other organizations not acknowledging the belt. But, George Kambosos’s shocking upset over the Takeover was a blow to this agenda as he seems to repudiate the idea of being called an undisputed champion.
“We are going to get it done, and there won’t be any more games or bullshit about what it is.”
George Kambosos Jr, unified lightweight champion
HANEY WANTS TO BE MANDATORY
Social media went ablaze when WBO champions Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade and Terence “Bud” Crawford requested the IBF and WBC to make them mandatory challengers for their belt holders.
“I directed my team to petition the WBCBoxing to make me FutureOfBoxing [Jermell Charlo] mandatory.”
Demetrius Andrade, WBO middleweight champion
“IBFUSBAboxing can y’all make me mandatory at 147, so I can see something.”
Terence Crawford, WBO welterweight champion
Haney has decided to add his name to the list by going on social media with a demand to make sure he gets the fight with Kambosos.
The WBC champion would like nothing more than to put an end to the franchise belt agenda. So this could solve the problem, once and for all.
