Ricky Hatton To Fight Marco Antonio Barrera on July 2!
Despite its strenuous nature, mental demands and inherent danger, all too often retired fighters can not let the sport of boxing go. Some find themselves in financial crunches and slip the gloves on simply as a way to pay the bills. Yet, others are more than economically solvent but can’t live without the roar of the crowd and the thrill of combat. Such seems to be the case with retired super lightweight champion Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton (45-3, 32 KO’s).
The Hitman has announced that he will return to stage an eight-round exhibition against Marco Antonio Barrera (67-7, 44 KO’s). Hatton, 43, will face the Mexican legend in his Manchester backyard on July 2. When they collide, Hatton will snap a ten-year stint of inactivity, whereas Barrera, 48, has been idle for eleven years.
WHAT’S IN THE TANK?!
When active, The Hitman utilized a fan-friendly, straight forward style of attack that produced many memorable moments and endeared him to the boxing public. During his travels in the ring, Hatton had the occasion to take on such notable fighters as Kostya Tszyu, Luis Collazo, Jose Luis Castillo, Paul Malignaggi, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Since his retirement The Hitman has slid into the role of boxing promoter and this is a role he greatly enjoys. Also, in 2018, he even assisted Tyson Fury in The Gypsy King’s return to the ring against Sefer Seferi.
It will be interesting to see what condition Ricky Hatton returns in though. Even during his prime years, Hatton was saddled with the tongue-in-cheek moniker of “Ricky Fatton” due how much weight he would put on in between fights. Hatton would embrace the stigma and even came out wearing a fat-suit during his ring walk against Paul Malignaggi. When all is said and done though, this should be another one of the dreary spectacle events that take place when long retired, well-grizzled boxers return to the ring. Regardless of how exciting, or mundane, this match turns out to be, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news!
