Eddie Hearn Targeting October for Julio Cesar Martinez vs Sunny Edwards
The flyweight division is pulling its weight in regards to delivering big, fan-friendly fights. Another unification could be taking place in the fall between IBF flyweight champion Sunny “Showtime” Edwards (18-0, 4KO) and WBC champion Julio Cesar Martinez (18-2, 14KO).
This fight has been in the making for a long-time, and it’s one Showtime Edwards will be more than happy to take, if a deal can get done. Edwards has been on the warpath of wanting to fight the WBC champion since defeating former champion Moruti Mthalane back in April 2021.
After his follow-up performance against Jayson Mama, the IBF champion wasted little time calling out Martinez. Moreover, he left promoter Frank Warren of Queensberry Promotions in hopes of landing bigger fights.
Martinez is a tough-as-nails, never-say-die, Mexican fighter. He leaves it all in the ring and is not afraid to take any challenge. He has a history with the Edwards Clan as many fans believe he was en route to dethroning older brother Charlie Edwards in 2019.
TAKING CARE OF FAMILY BUSINESS
The Mexican champion knocked out the older Edwards in round three. However, the ruling was revised to a no-contest due to Edwards being hit with a body shot while on one knee. Many boxing enthusiasts gave Edwards the side-eye for vacating the title and moving up instead of doing a rematch.
Showtime has been eager for the fight so he can take care of some unfinished business. Well, it seems he may get his shot. During an interview with iFL TV, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that both teams are in talks to make a unification match.
“We are talking to Sunny Edwards’ team about the Julio Cesar Martinez unification. I think that’s the right fight, that’s a big fight […] hopefully we can make Martinez against Sunny Edwards unification for October.”
Edwards, paying attention to what’s happening around his division, took to social media with a message for the fans.
