Yoenli Hernandez Gets TKO Over Gausha; Is Lara Title Fight Next?
In his tenth professional dustup, middleweight Cuban boxer Yoenli “El Diablo” Hernandez (10-0, 9 KO’s) defeated veteran fighter Terrell Gausha (24-6-1, 12 KO’s) by bogus fourth-round stoppage. While Hernandez was giving Gausha a tough time, referee Allen Huggins seemingly stopped the fight because he could. The oddball stoppage was very anticlimactic and immediately drew boos from the crowd.
Despite the sour finish to this latest bout, El Diablo, ranked #1 (WBA), #4 (WBO), #4 (WBC) and #13 (IBF), has a bevy of options before him. Naturally, he and his team will look to utilize his WBA standing to engineer a showdown with WBA 160-pound champion Erislandy Lara. At 42, Lara is quite long in the tooth and therefore will likely have to be forced to face the spry Cuban bruiser.
With Janibek Alimkhanuly having recently been stripped of his IBF belt and placed on suspension by the WBO ,he has largely nullified his relevance. Given that fact, the last potential title bout for Hernandez is against WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames (25-1-1, 18 KO’s). Adames is fresh off his March 21 dismantling of Austin Williams. Luckily, neither appears to be injured and should be returning to action roughly about the same time. Let’s see what’s next for El Diablo.
