Michael Hunter Is Reportedly Set To Face Hughie Fury in July!
Unified champion Oleksandr Usyk, WBC champion Tyson Fury, and two-time unified champion Anthony Joshua make-up the centerpiece of the heavyweight division. With the top fighters and world titles off the table, the middle-of-the-pack heavyweights have had to step up to make good fights happen.
One of the better heavyweights in the division, Michael “The Bounty” Hunter (20-1-2, 14KOs), is reportedly set to return to the ring in July against former world title challenger Hughie Fury (26-3, 15KOs). This fight is of significance to both men. Each hopes to remain in the hunt for a world title opportunity down the line. Hunter is currently ranked #8 in the WBO, #9 in the WBC, and #2 in the WBA. As for Fury, he’s ranked #14 in the IBF and #4 in the WBA.
“The Bounty”, who’s coming off of a surprising draw against Jerry Forrest back in December 2021, needs to remind the boxing world of how dangerous a threat he can be when he’s clicking on all cylinders. Hunter is 3-2 in his last five fights, including two draws; one against the aforementioned Forrest and one from former WBA Regular heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin.
When it comes to Fury, he’s a former world title challenger looking to get another crack at world title glory. In his sole attempt, he was beaten by former WBO champion Joseph Parker by a majority decision back in September of 2017. Since that loss, he’s 6-2 with wins over former WBC champion Samuel Peter, Mariusz Wach, and Christian Hammer.
Needless to say, with both men ranked high in the WBA rankings, this is a huge fight for them. Hunter should be enlisted as the favorite. However, after his last performance, one may not be too quick to dismiss Fury.
