Harper vs Jonas take-two, anyone?
If there was ever a case to make as to why the boxing community needs to pay more attention to women’s boxing, Terri Harper vs Natasha Jonas hammered in the nail.
The August 7 DAZN televised bout pitted WBC and IBO junior lightweight champion Terri Harper (10-0-1, 5ko) facing former 2012 Olympian Natasha Jonas (9-1-1, 7ko), and they didn’t disappoint.
The historical event of two British female fighters competing for a world title left a lasting impression on fans of a true grit type of fight. In the end, all three judges scored the bout a draw with many feeling that Jonas edged out a victory. However, some feel the champion did just enough to win. In a situation like this, there is only one thing to do: run it back; and it looks like all parties are on board with it happening fairly soon.
During an interview with Boxing Social, the former Olympian seemed optimistic when asked about what both teams said after the fight to a rematch.
“I would like to think so. We had brief discussions, you know just saying they said yeah, and we said yeah. But you know nothing in boxing is ever set until it’s contracted so we’ll see.”
This a fight that is screaming for a rematch and would draw more interest because it checked all the boxes: having an underdog, the back and forth drama, and both fighters giving just as good as they were taking.
