3kingsboxing.com has confirmed a contract does exist. However, things are on pause following a decision by undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who is expected to face WBO mandatory John Ryder on the traditional Cinco De Mayo weekend.
CONFIRMATION FROM SAMPSON LEWKOWICZ
Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing, who is the promoter of both fighters, issued the following statement regarding the existence of a contract.
“Yes, it’s valid, but we are waiting on May 6 to see what decision Canelo will make. It’s like what David said, Canelo has options. It is up to Canelo on what he wants to do.
“Nobody can force him [Canelo], but at the same time, if he doesn’t fight him [David Benavidez], he will give up the title.”
IF NO CANELO FIGHT THEN BRING ON BENAVIDEZ VS MORRELL
According to Lewkowicz, the fight could have been made some time ago between Benavidez vs Plant. However, he decided to hold off on making the fight with the hopes of bigger financial gain for his fighters down the line.
“I could have made Benavidez vs Plant five years ago, but I let the fight marinate. If Benavidez fights Canelo the winner would fight Morrell in a unification.”

Regarding Lewkowicz statement on a unification, there are a couple scenarios that can play out. Canelo could elect to face Benavidez if he defeats Ryder. If Benavidez wins, a bout with Morrell for the undisputed crown could happen thereafter. On the other hand, Alvarez could decide to vacate the titles, leaving the possibility for both Benavidez and Morrell to face each other for the vacant WBC and WBA super titles.
Benavidez deserves a fight with Alvarez for the undisputed crown. However, in this author’s opinion the more intriguing match-up is Benavidez vs Morrell..
They are both close in height, speed, ring IQ and possess an unlimited gas tank. It would be interesting to see how the Cuban champion handles Benavidez’ effective aggression. On the other hand, how would the Mexican Monster deal with the pure boxing ability of Morrell?
Things are heating up in the super middleweight division as Benvidez is in the center of the action.
