Mary Spencer Returns Strong and Ready to Fight a Champion!
In women’s boxing, several divisions are thriving with good fights, and the junior middleweight division is beginning to join the class. Undefeated junior middleweight contender Mary Spencer (7-0, 5KO) has quickly managed to become a threat to any of the champions in the division.
THE HISTORY OF MARY SPENCER
On September 9, the Canadian fighter, at 37 years old, stepped into the ring against Cynthia Lozano (9-2, 7KO). Spencer made quick work of her opponent with a first-round stoppage. The victory earned her the WBA International and WBC Silver titles and put her in the hunt for a possible title shot.
Spencer gained notoriety among Canadian boxing fans for her accomplishments in the amateurs. She won gold medals in the World Amateur Championships in 2005, 2008, and 2010. She also won one gold medal in the Pan Am Games in 2011.
Spencer stepped in the ring with some top names in boxing in the amateurs, including two-divisional undisputed champion Claressa Shields. She holds victories over undisputed super middleweight champion Franchon Crew-Dezurn and unified champion Natasha Jonas.
SPENCER IS READY FOR A TITLE SHOT
The Canadian took some time off from the sport during the amateurs and before turning professional. In the post-fight interview, Spencer explained how the layoffs have been beneficial.
“I took a few years away from boxing […] giving my body and my mind a few years of rest really reignited the fire. I felt stronger when I came back.”
She feels ready to challenge the champions of the division like Marie Eve Dicaire (IBF), Hanna Rankin (WBA), and Jonas (WBC/WBO).
“I do feel ready for them, I absolutely do. I would love to fight any of those champions.”
THE FIGHT THAT COULD HAPPEN NEXT
WBA champion Rankin is busy with an upcoming battle against former junior lightweight champion Terri Harper. Jonas is on the hunt to fight the winner. So the fight that could be next is a showdown with IBF champion Dicaire. That would be a huge fight. With both women from Canada, the fans will come out in droves to see it.
Spencer has proven to be ready for who or whatever challenge comes next.
