Mikaela Mayer Reaffirms Desire to Fight Alycia Baumgardner On Her Way To Undisputed!
For Mikaela Mayer (16-0, 5 KO’s) fighting the best and becoming undisputed junior lightweight champion is all she wants. The WBO and IBF champion has made her intentions crystal clear to anyone that would listen. After picking up the IBF title with a win over Maiva Hamadouche (22-2, 18KOs), she put herself halfway there to accomplishing her goal of becoming undisputed champion at 130-pounds.
BEEF WITH ALYCIA BAUMGARDNER!
Ever since Alycia Baumgardner (11-1, 7 KO’s) won the WBC 130-pound title with a brutal fourth round knockout over former champion Terri Harper, she’s been put on notice by Mayer. This has led to a back and forth on social media between the two champions. Baumgardner feels disrespected by some of the comments made by Mayer.
Mayer, on the other hand, views this situation totally different. To her, it boils down to whoever is a champion in her division she wants to fight; simple as that. She yet again reiterated that in an interview with Behind The Gloves.
“The thing is, when Terri Harper had the belts, I came for her. Right, because I want to be undisputed and I want to fight the champions. And, now that she’s the champion, I’m going to come for her. And so I’ve come for her, and she’s seem to take it as very offensive.
Like I’m jealous and, ‘oh you know it’s Alycia The Bomb Baumgardner’s time and everybody can get it and blah, blah, blah. And, Mikaela’s just jealous because the attention is not on her.’ This isn’t high school to me. I want to fight the champions and I want to become undisputed. So you are in my way of that, so now I’m coming for you. That’s it.”
YOU HAVE TO RESPECT MAYER’S ATTITUDE!
Like her or not, Mayer’s attitude is to be applauded. Unlike some other champions who may rest on their championship status laurels, that’s not the case here. She knows in order for her to be remembered as a great in the sport of boxing, she’ll have to do so by continuing to challenge and beat the best in her career. To her, it’s nothing personal with Baumgardner; strictly business.
