Oscar De La Hoya Suggests Devin Haney Meet Ryan Garcia Next

Naturally, the newly crowned WBC super lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (31-0, 15 KO’s) turned heads in his last tour of duty. In that assignment, Haney made the two-time world champion Regis Prograis look like a green amateur. The performance was sufficient enough to get Golden Boy Promotion founder Oscar De La Hoya to start sniffing around for a fight. If given, or believed, De La Hoya would love to pair Haney with his charge “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KO’s.

On the one hand, there is no denying that Garcia and Haney are two of the biggest names in the division. Not only this, the two share an extensive history with roots stretching back to their amateur days. Best of all, they have done a great job of woofing at one another as professionals. For all these reasons, a prizefight between The Dream and King Ry makes a great deal of business sense.

On the other hand, the two fighters are currently on two different trajectories. Garcia just got back into the win column after suffering his first professional loss, by knockout, to Gervonta Davis. In that get back fight, against the largely unknown Oscar Duarte, Garcia scored his own knockout.

First however, Garcia hit a rough patch in the bout which led to him too frequently scampering around the ring like a blond at Camp Crystal Lake. Since his less-than-sensational victory, Garcia has refrained from calling out the cream of the crop. Conversely, in his second to last fight, Haney successfully defended his status as the undisputed champion for the second time against future Hall of Famer Vasiliy Lomachenko.

In his last match, The Dream moved up to 140 and thoroughly dismantled Prograis to become a two-division champion. So while Haney versus Garcia was a fight that was once in high demand, it would seem that now it would require being built up again. Thankfully, no matter what happens with these two fighters and their backers, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report all the meaningful developments!
